Evening Record Article
December 11, 1918

Below is the Evening Record Article on December 11, 1918 telling of
Willard Pullen being severely wounded. Willard Pullen would have received the
Purple Heart
for his wounds.

An interesting article below Willard Pullen’s article in the Evening Record is about
Christy Mathewson, one of the greatest pitchers of all time. He was a college graduate from Bucknell University, which was unheard of at the time.  The article just briefly tells of
Christy Mathewson not having his contract renewed and that the Cincinnati team he was managing had not heard from him. The team did not want to give the position away until they heard from him. What had happened was that during training in France, Christy Mathewson and several other men failed to see the signal to put their gas masks on, and Christy Mathewson, who had been serving near the front for a few weeks, got a whiff of the poison gas during this training session. Christy Mathewson was never the same upon his return and he died only 7 years later in 1925 at the age of 45 years.
